TITLE: The Pierre Auger Observatory (Phase 2)
Abstract: The Pierre Auger Observatory is currently the largest ultra high energy cosmic ray obser-vatory in the world. In this presentation I will introduce cosmic ray physics and detectors, describe the phase 1 observatory, and highlight some of the results.
When we started the project 30 years ago we had a had clear vision of the science we wanted to accomplish. Along the way, as the data accumulated it pointed in directions that were not expected, causing us to modify our vision. Some of the obvious truths turned out not to be so true, and other avenues of investigation opened. This led us to propose an upgrade (AugerPrime) of the Observatory. The upgrade is now well underway.
I will discuss the main science goals of phase 2 of the Observatory, describe the modifications to the detector hardware, and present the current status of implementation.
