TITLE: Symmetries and observables in (quantum) gravity
Abstract: In gravity, spacetime is dynamical, which makes it different from all other fundamental interactions, where spacetime is part of the fixed background structure. The group of invariances of General Relativity, the group of diffeomorphisms, is also different from that of a gauge field theory. In my talk, I will explain these features, how they lead to technical and conceptual difficulties in the classical and quantum theories, and why the construction of diffeomorphism-invariant observables is both challenging and key to understanding quantum gravity.
